Cardinal Spellman’s Correspondence

Spread the love

The Archives recently received  a donation of material relating to Cardinal Spellman.  The bulk of the material are letters written to and from Cardinal Spellman, from his early days as a priest in Rome through his tenure in New York.  The letters are a very interesting addition to the already existing Cardinal Spellman Collection, and will give users a glimpse into a different facet of the Cardinal’s life.  We will update our followers when the collection is processed and ready for use!

One of the most interesting things that I’ve found in working with the new collection is the wide variety of people that the Cardinal corresponded with on a regular basis.  His connections included businessmen, political figures, other religious leaders, and sometimes even well-known celebrities.

Rockefeller 10.4.60

An October 4, 1960 letter from New York State Governor Nelson Rockefeller.

Giants 6.21.66

The letterhead from a June 21, 1966 note from an executive with the New York Giants football team.

Real estate 10.18.63

A letter dated October 18, 1963 from John Reynolds, a real estate broker who assisted the Archdiocese with many transactions.

Readers Digest 11.9.67

A November 9, 1967 letter from The Reader’s Digest publishing company.

Vienna 1.17.64

A January 17, 1964 letter from Archbishop Franz Konig, of the Archdiocese of Vienna, Austria.
